THE SOLAR SYSTEM
- Solar System is a part of the Milky way.
- It contains the Sun, eight planets around, Asteroids, Meteoroids, Comets, Satellites, dust particles, air, etc.
- The sun is at the centre. This is the nearest star to the earth.
- Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are the eight planets in order from the Sun.
- The Path of a planet is called Orbit.
- Planets revolves around the sun.
- Mercury and Venus are known as the Inferior Planets because their orbits are found between the Sun and the Earth.
- Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are known as Superior Planets, because their orbits are beyond the earth.
- Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system.
- Satellite is a celestial body which revolves around a planet.
- There are 181 known satellites found in the solar system.
- Asteroids lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. They revolve around the sun.
- Asteroids are called Planetoids or Minor Planets.
- It is believed that there are about 50,000 asteroids.
- Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are known as Inner Planets.
- Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are outer planets because they lie beyond the asteroid belt.
- The Inner Planets are known as Terrestrial Planets while the Outer Planets are called Jovian Planets.
- The Kuiper Belt lies beyond the orbit of Neptune which composed of frozen ices.
- Halley's comet is a notable comet. It appears once for every 75 years. It appeared in 1986 and expecting to be appeared in 2061.
- Meteors are called as Shooting Stars.
- Fallen meteors are called as Meteorites.
- Geologists believe that the Barringer Crater in Arizona created by a meteorite about 5,000 years back.
